In a Bathroom, Nothing Can Be Moved Later

A bathroom is the least forgiving room in the house to change your mind in. Once waterproofing and tiling are done, adding a point for a heated towel rail or moving a wall light means breaking into finished work.

Bathrooms also carry zone rules that limit what can be installed and how close it can sit to a bath or shower. Those rules need to shape the plan, not be discovered at inspection.

Decisions that need making before the tiler starts:

  • Where the heated towel rail goes and how it's switched
  • Whether underfloor heating is going in
  • Vanity and mirror lighting positions
  • Exhaust location and where it vents to

Get these right at rough-in and the rest of the renovation runs without electrical hold ups.

Planned at Rough-In, Finished Properly at Fit-Off

We plan the bathroom electrical with you before the walls close, taking in lighting, exhaust, heating, shaver points and any towel rail or underfloor heating you're adding.

Every fitting is chosen for the zone it sits in, so what goes above the vanity and what goes near the shower are treated differently. That's our job to get right, not yours to worry about.

We complete the rough-in, then return once tiling and the vanity are in to fit off, test and certify the work.

What we do:

  • Plan lighting, heating and exhaust before waterproofing
  • Rough in to suit the bathroom zones
  • Wire heated towel rails and underfloor heating
  • Install exhaust ducted to outside
  • Fit off after tiling, then test and certify

Asked questions

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Before waterproofing. The rough-in has to be complete while the walls are open, and the positions depend on where the vanity, shower and any heating are going, so we need the layout first.

  • Yes. Heated towel rails need a point in a permitted position and are usually switched from outside the wet area, sometimes on a timer. We plan the position at rough-in so the rail sits where you want it.

  • We do the electrical side, including the circuit, the thermostat position and connecting the system. It has to go in before the floor is tiled, so it needs deciding early.

  • Bathrooms are divided into zones based on how close an area is to water. Each zone limits what can be installed there and what rating a fitting needs. We select and position fittings to suit the zone they'll sit in.

  • Sometimes, particularly if you're adding underfloor heating or a towel rail on top of lighting and exhaust. We check what your switchboard can carry as part of the plan and flag it early if an upgrade is needed.
