Bedrooms That Are Too Warm to Sleep In
Running air conditioning all night to make one bedroom sleepable is an expensive way to solve a small problem. In most rooms a ceiling fan does the job for a few cents a night.
The catch is that a lot of ceilings only have a light point, not a fan point, and the existing switch has no way to control speed. That's the part people need an electrician for.
What we normally get asked to do:
- Put fans into bedrooms that only have a light point
- Replace old fans that wobble, click or have slowed down
- Install fan and light combinations on separate controls
- Add outdoor rated fans to alfrescos and pergolas
Fans also need to be fixed to something structural, not just the plasterboard, which is where a lot of DIY installs come undone.

We install new fans, replace old ones and add fan points where there's only a light. Every fan is fixed to structure, balanced and run up through its full speed range before we leave.
Where you're fitting a fan and light combination, we'll set up the switching so the two work independently. It's a small thing that makes a real difference in a bedroom.
For outdoor areas we use fans rated for the location, because an indoor fan under a pergola won't last through a couple of winters.
What we do:
- Check the ceiling structure and existing wiring
- Add a fan point where there's only a light point
- Mount and balance the fan properly
- Set up separate light and fan switching
- Run through every speed and test before leaving

Frequently Asked Questions
A straight replacement where a fan point already exists is the cheapest option. Adding a fan where there's only a light point costs more because there's wiring and switching involved. We give you a fixed price after seeing the room.
Usually yes, but it isn't a swap. The fan needs fixing to structure rather than plasterboard, and it needs separate control for the fan speed, so there's wiring work involved. We'll tell you what's required for your ceiling.
Most often the mount has worked loose, the blades are out of balance, or the fan was never fixed to anything structural. We check the fixing first, because a wobble that's ignored gets worse.
Yes, using fans rated for outdoor or coastal conditions. An indoor fan installed outside will corrode and fail, so the rating matters more than the price difference suggests.
They can. Most fans have a reverse setting that pushes warm air back down from the ceiling instead of letting it sit up there. We set the direction and show you the switch when we hand it over.
